After a comfort stop at Exeter Services, we will arrive at Dartmouth in time for lunch after which we will make our way to the Dartmouth Castle Ferry for one of the best loved short boat trips in Britain. The ten- minute ride takes us to Grade 1 English Heritage Dartmouth Castle, one of the most beautifully located Fortresses in England, with some of the most stunning scenery. For over 600 years it has guarded the narrow entrence to the Dart estuary. Built in 1388 to protect the town and harbour against French raids during the 100 Years War it became the first purpose built coastal artillery Fort in Britain. It saw action in the Civil War and was updated through the 19th Century and remained in use during both World Wars until 1955. It also has a 15th Century gun tower and Victorian Gun Battery which you can explore. There is a charming cafe which serves hot/cold food and drinks.
